Training and Working with Small Dogs – Video

Great things do come in small packages!

Transcript of Video:

These two dogs are two little chihuahuas that came to me just this past week (note: this video is from 2011) with severe insecurity which is very typical of what we do here. Now, they are so small and fragile and you have to be so delicate with little dogs like this.

The very first step is getting them to like me. They have to like and trust me so that I can open them up to learning things.

Although little dogs and big dogs essentially think the same, obviously little dogs are more fragile. So, although the techniques are the same; in handling a little dog you have to be more careful of their physical abilities.

You can see I have a treat there. Although I don’t do any treat training – I don’t give a treat as a reward. Look at the reaction she is giving. Again, I want her to feel that way toward me. That is a big deal.

{moves to second dog}

I am walking him around just to do some leader/follow type of stuff. But I am very delicate with the leash; I don’t want to do anything that involves force or anything to intimidate. I don’t ever want to do that – never. I don’t really use any punishment at all. I may use the word “no” but “no” is just a word in the way we use it.

One of the things I hear over and over again is how little dogs tend to be known as yappy, barky, and aggressive. As a result a lot of people don’t get little dogs. How can you look at this and not think little dogs are cool?
